This is just the second release in The Cleveland Orchestra’s own label. The first, issued in June last year, was an elegantly presented 3CD (optional free HD download code and 150-page booklet included) box set of selections from Beethoven, Strauss, Varese, Prokofiev et al.

The present single Hybrid SACD comes in an equally elegant sleeve about the size of an old 45’s. Again, there’s a substantial booklet, this time with notes and essays including conductor Franz Welser-Möst, writing back in June, on the challenges the orchestra faced when confronted with the pandemic and its effects on the arts.

As it happens, one of my favourite recordings of Schubert’s Symphony in C (The Great) is with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra, captured back in 1957. Nowadays, maybe that makes me either...
