Back in the 19th century, the flamboyant Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate was box office gold, up there with the likes of Joseph Joachim and Henri Vieuxtemps, his tone reportedly ideally pure, his technique refreshingly free from sentimental excess. Indeed, the notoriously unsentimental George Bernard Shaw maintained that Sarasate “left criticism gasping miles behind him”, opining that though there were many composers of music for the violin, there were but few composers of violin music.

Nowadays Sarasate is best known for his intricately challenging Zigeunerweisen – a showpiece for players from Heifitz to Joshua Bell. His Carmen Fantasy also still gets an occasional airing, one of 13 ‘fantasies’ on themes from the popular operas of the day. A few years back, German violinist Volker Reinhold recorded the six better known. By following up with the remaining seven, he does us all a service, since compositional quality turns out to be immaterial of current familiarity of source material. Thus two reworkings of material from Gounod’s Faust, are matched by obscure but attractive works like the Fantaisie sur La Dame Blanche de F.-A. Boieldieu and the Caprice sur Mireille De Ch. Gounod.

Reinhold is blessed with a rich, warm tone, pin-point intonation and a musical imagination equipped to breathe life into these lyrical and substantial (most are over 10 minutes long) works. Listen to how he spices up Mèphistophélès’ fiendish Le Veau d’Or in the Nouvelle Fantaisie Sur Faust, while in the earlier Souvenirs De Faust, he embraces the ardent poetry of Salut Demeure with some immaculate double stopping. Technical virtuosity abounds in filigree passages like the divisions on Don Giovanni’s Deh, vieni alla finestra. Elsewhere, his finesse in potpourris from Zampa and La Dame Blanche will make you keen to explore this forgotten fare.

He is perfectly complemented throughout by Ralph Zedler on piano who, although he gets less chances to simply show off, offers intelligent and sensitive support. MDG’s clean, direct recording is most natural and the booklet notes a model of informative clarity. A highly entertaining release.
