It’s hard to imagine a duo more in sync with each other than Leonard and Slava Grigoryan. The brothers have been playing together since their childhood and it shows – there was an easy camaraderie to their ensemble as they treated the City Recital Hall to the intimate Songs Without Words.

The pair are touring to promote their upcoming ABC Classics album, available later this month – a collection of songs arranged for two guitars by their father, Eduard Grigoryan – but they set the mood with more familiar material, one of Slava Grigoryan’s own compositions, the atmospheric Fantasy on a Theme by William Lawes.

The two guitarists sat close in the low light – Slava hunched forward over his guitar, his sound more direct and penetrating than the rounder tone produced by his brother – transforming the recital hall into a smaller, cosier space.

The brothers mingled material from the new album – a cheeky arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s None but the Lonely Heart (from the composer’s Opus 6 set), Fauré’s Après un Rêve – with older repertoire, such as Leonard Grigoryan’s Blues for Ralph, a driving, rhythmic work full of jazzy solos, dedicated to American guitarist Ralph Towner (whose Duende was heard...
