This admirably adult romantic comedy from French female director and co-writer Carine Tardieu raises a few smiles without ever being exactly hilarious. Take a look beyond the comic contrivances though and you find a rather tenderly and amused look at paternity issues, with four perfectly pitched, subtle performances from, among others, François Damiens (the pater familias in last year’s seasonal hit The Bélier Family) and Cécile de France.

Their characters, bomb disposal expert and widower Erwan, and doctor Anna, first meet in a seaside town and thanks to some wild coincidences, find a mutual romantic attraction complicated by the possibility that they could share the same father.

The film’s only major flaw is a very silly sub-plot around a teenage village idiot character who may or may not be the father of Erwan’s pregnant daughter’s child, but luckily it doesn’t quite overturn the apple cart.
