With the catalogue littered with pairings of the Mozart Clarinet Quintet – a fine old chestnut, but a chestnut nonetheless – with the Brahms or occasionally the Weber, it’s good to see a release that looks a little further afield. The Tesla Quartet – Ross Snyder, Michelle Lie (violins), Edwin Kaplan (viola) and Serafim Smigelskiy (cello) – have done that and how in this intriguing and ultimately satisfying program on the imaginative Orchid Classics label.
