Some remarkable pianists maintain careers outside the arts. Frederic Chiu has a degree in computer technology; Fredrik Ullén (currently in the process of recording Sorabji’s “impossible” 100 Transcendental Études for BIS) is a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience. Now the Swedish label has picked up the Australian-born Paul Wee, whose primary occupation is as a junior barrister in London, specialising in commercial law and investor-state arbitration. Wee studied piano at the Manhattan School of Music, but decided against a life in the arts and instead took a law degree at Oxford. He gives occasional recitals, balancing music with a busy career at the bar.
