The opera icon is to be the subject of a new film starring Noomi Repace, and TV mini-series starring Meryl Streep.

Swedish actress Noomi Rapace is to star in a new biopic of the life of opera diva Maria Callas. The film, titled Callas, is based on Alfonso Signorini’s biography Too Proud, Too Fragile, and will focus on the American-born Greek singer’s two decade relationship with Greek tycoon, Aristotle Onassis.

In addition to her world-wide reputation as an opera icon, Callas was also the focus of press attention for her dramatic personal life. Following the end of her relationship to Onassis the singer become increasingly reclusive, passing away from heart failure in Paris in 1977 at the age of 53.

Meryl Streep

Rapace has previously starred in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic Prometheus, but she will not be the only Hollywood A-lister to be portraying ‘La Divinia’ in the coming months. American television producers HBO are making an adaptation of Terrence McNally’s Tony Award-winning play Master Class, which will star Meryl Streep as Callas. The show will follow the story of Callas in her later years, teaching students at New York’s Julliard School of Music.
