David Lopes de Oliveira – Davi to his mates – a 22 year old from Brazil, has been delighting his fellow tradies at a Sydney construction site with impromptu renditions of popular opera arias.

Patrick Keating, who works with the aspiring singer on an Edgecliff worksite, posted Oliveira’s performance of Nessun Dorma on Facebook. He wrote “on a sunny Monday morning in Sydney the noise of the building site was powerfully pushed away by Davi Oliveira’s version of Pavarottis [sic] Nessun Dorma”. Oliveira is captured operating a large power drill before launching into a full-throated rendition of the tenor aria from Puccini’s Turandot.

Keating added that Oliveira will soon stop working in construction to further pursue his dream of an opera career. “Davi is actually studying music this year and one day dreams of singing in Sydney’s opera house. Like and share and let’s make his dream come true!”

The post has been enthusiastically received on Facebook, with over 3000 views and 112 shares. Keating, who was interviewed by Channel Nine news, said “we were working with him for ages before we worked out he could sing like Pavarotti. I thought he was joking at first but he gave me a full blast right there on the street – I couldn’t believe it”.

Although Oliveira and his performances will be missed by his colleagues, Keating was quick to emphasise that the worksite was “one hundred percent” in support of his operatic aspirations.
