It’s far from the expected norm, but the arts have become a hot political topic ahead of the federal election next month. Both the Greens and Labor have made bold pledges to bolster arts funding in recent weeks, as well as making promises to reverse some of the damaging cuts made during the Abbott-Turnbull administration, should they be elected.

The positive impact that a change in government could bring has galvanised the arts community, with a number of umbrella organisations spearheading campaigns under the hashtag #IStandWithTheArts. One such group is the Theatre Network of NSW, who today announced its intention to use performances by its seven member companies to directly campaign to audiences, between June 17 and the election in July. At the conclusion of every show presented by Sydney Theatre Company, Hot House, Belvoir Theatre, Bell Shakespeare, Shopfront, Urban Theatre Projects and The Ensemble Theatre, the performers will address the audience about the impact of funding cuts and cuts to the Australia Council, asking their patrons to ensure their vote contributes to a more financially secure future for Australian artists.
