After opening last week on Broadway to critical acclaim, Australia’s Global Creatures has announced that its stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 movie musical Moulin Rouge! will make its Australian debut in Melbourne in 2021. It will play at the Regent Theatre, which is set to undergo a $19.4 million rejuvenation in the lead up to the premiere. Reviewing the Broadway opening, Limelight’s Editor at Large Clive Paget wrote “with an expanded, every-one-a-winner soundtrack, a first-rate, hard-working cast and a staging that looks a million dollars and counting, it takes feelgood to a whole new level.”

Directed by Alex Timbers, Moulin Rouge! The Musical has a book by John Logan, choreography by Sonya Tayeh and music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Justin Levine. The design team includes Derek McLane (sets), Catherine Zuber (costumes), Justin Townsend (lighting) and Peter Hylenski (sound). The stage show features songs from the Academy Award-winning film as well as contemporary music by artists like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Adele and Britney Spears in a continuation of Luhrmann’s jukebox musical-style soundtrack. The musical received its world premiere in Boston last July.

“It was an honour for our Australian born company to premiere a new musical on Broadway and receive such a warm reception from critics and audiences alike. We’re thrilled to bring Moulin Rouge! The Musical home to Melbourne, the heart of fashion, art and culture, in 2021,” said Global Creatures’ Gerry Ryan and Carmen Pavlovic.

“The show’s artistic ethos of ‘Deluxe Maximalism’ is reflected in its opulent set, costumes, music and choreography making it a perfect match with the grandeur of the Regent Theatre.”

“We’re grateful to Premier Andrews, Minister [Martin] Pakula and the Victorian Government for their support and determination to bring the show to Melbourne. Their vision for the city’s cultural experiences sits at the heart of the show’s artistic ambition and values. We feel certain that Melbourne and Moulin Rouge! The Musical will together make a memorable event for audiences and become a defining moment in the show’s international life.”

“Melbourne’s thriving cultural scene and its major events calendar are renowned around the world, and securing huge productions like this is why we are so highly regarded,” said Minister Pakula. “Moulin Rouge! The Musical is going to be a major winner for Victoria when it lands in 2021 and it’s fantastic that it will open in a rejuvenated Regent Theatre.”

Global Creatures’ King Kong, which opened in Melbourne in 2013, is also currently playing Broadway, with an upcoming run in Shanghai the first of several planned international productions. The company’s smash-hit adaptation of the classic film Muriel’s Wedding is currently enjoying a return season in Sydney after premiering in 2017. It will then play Brisbane’s Lyric Theatre from September 19.
