Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre has announced Matthew Lutton as the company’s new Artistic Director. Lutton, who was formerly an Associate Artist with the company, has been Acting Artistic Director since the departure of Marion Potts in March, but has now been formally appointed to the theatre’s top job.

At only 30-years-old, Lutton is the youngest Director of an AMPAG organisation, but the talented director’s résumé, leading major programmes and directing productions for a number of Australia’s leading theatre and opera companies, including Belvoir, Black Swan Theatre Company, Griffin Theatre Company and West Australian Opera, positions him well to deliver Malthouse’s artistic vision.

Lutton shared his delight at the auspicious appointment saying, “The past three and half years I’ve spent at Malthouse Theatre have been incredibly important to me – it’s been my creative home, and a company that has allowed me to take risks and grow as an artist.” The award-winning director also spoke of his aspirations for Malthouse under his leadership. “I want to build on Malthouse Theatre’s past successes, especially the company’s history of collaboration with the independent sector and indigenous artists, and I feel very passionate about increasing our ability to bring together international and independent artists under the...
