Northern Ireland Opera has announced the appointment of Australian director Cameron Menzies as the company’s next Artistic Director. Menzies, who takes over the role from Walter Sutcliffe, begins this month, initially working remotely from Melbourne.

“At the end of an extensive process, with several outstanding candidates, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Cameron Menzies,” Roy Bailie, Chairman of Northern Ireland Opera said. “We welcome him most warmly and look forward to everything he will bring to opera in Northern Ireland and beyond.”

Menzies is currently Artistic Director is of The Classics Opera for City of Stonnington and Associate Artist/Director for Diva Opera in the UK. He has worked with companies including Deutsche Oper, Opera Australia, Short Black Opera Company, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre London and Victorian Opera, where his production of Salome in February was dubbed by Limelight‘s Patricia Maunder as “the company’s most impressive yet”. Menzies is also due to direct Victorian Opera’s production of Deborah Cheetham’s new opera Parrwang Lifts the Sky in 2021.
