Welsh baritone returns to Margaret River to duet amongst the vines with Rachelle Durkin.
In 2015 WA’s Leeuwin concert will be making a spectacular return in a program featuring loved classics of opera and stage musicals. The annual concert, which boasts a rich 30-year history, will feature Welsh bass baritone Bryn Terfel CBE and Australia’s Rachelle Durkin alongside the Perth Symphony Orchestra.
The enormously popular Terfel will be back on the Leeuwin stage for the first time since his appearance there in 1999. “I’m thrilled to be coming back to Leeuwin Estate for the concert in March,” he said. “I can’t believe it’s already 16 years since my last visit!”
It’s clearly not just opera that’s tempting him back: “The setting, the wine, the food and of course the music are all fresh in my mind – not to mention the wonderful hospitality and audience at Leeuwin. It promises to be the most fantastic evening. I can’t wait!”
Terfel, who it has just been announced will star in a London run of Stephen Sondheim’s murderous musical Sweeney Todd opposite actress Emma Thompson, is well known for his versatility as a concert performer and was made a CBE for services to Opera in the Queen’s New Year honours list. In 2006 he was awarded the Queen’s medal for music.
Also performing will be Australia’s own Rachelle Durkin. Currently based in New York, after having joined the Metropolitan Opera in 2001, Durkin has since appeared regularly there as a principal artist in many roles. Nevertheless, she still finds time to return to Australia, most recently in Opera Australia’s Don Pasquale and The Elixir of Love.
The Leeuwin concerts are renowned for their mix of the world’s finest musicians and entertainers. The alfresco events began in 1985 when the London Philharmonic Orchestra toured Australia. The family-owned Leeuwin Estate has continued the tradition of supporting and sponsoring the arts, staging an annual series of concerts. The ensuing success has gained considerable recognition for the small town of Margaret River.
Bryn Terfel and Rachelle Durkin perform at Leewin Estate on Saturday March 7, 2015.
