Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti, trumpeter Alison Balsom and opera singer Danielle de Niese have leant their musical skills to an all-star recording of the Beach Boys’ iconic hit God Only Knows. The three classical musicians joined a line up which included Kylie Minogue, Pharrel Williams, Coldplay, Sir Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Brian May alongside the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Tees Valley Youth Choir. Martin James Bartlett, the 16-year-old pianist who won the BBC’s young musician of the year also appears.

“It was quite a challenge,” admits the track’s producer Ethan Johns, but it seems to have been well worth it. “They’re coming together for the joy of music and for the joy of doing it, which for me is the best reason.”

Benedetti appears in a dress with giant sequins, rather like a glitter ball, Balsom wears feathers and is seated on a trapeze in a birdcage and de Niese is seen dangling in the heavens holding a bunch of balloons.
