The 2018 Winterreise with myself and Erin Helyard on ABC Classic represented not just our first recording of Schubert, but also marked the beginning of a collaboration exploring the works by this music giant. It was a bit of a baptism by fire to begin with a work that many consider his most famous. Feeling the weight of legendary singers before us like Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Hermann Prey and Christa Ludwig, I think we both quietly thought to ourselves – “Couldn’t we just start with something less scary?”

But, we really felt we had something important to say about this music, and a new perspective to give. I think that helped us overcome any initial nerves. The disc ended up being a joy to record and people’s reactions to the result were so encouraging. When the ABC asked us to follow the disc up with another of Schubert’s equally well-known cycles, Die Schöne Müllerin, we jumped at the opportunity!
