Sony Classical has announced an exclusive long term agreement with Georgian soprano Nino Machaidze.
Now 27, the young opera singer launched her international career in 2007 with appearances as Marie in Donizetti’s La Fille du Regiment at La Scala and the Rome Opera. These were followed by her debut at the Salzburg Festival where she performed alongside Rolando Villazon in Romeo et Juliette.
These appearances gave her career a meteoric rise and, since then, this superb young singer has been in great demand in all of the world’s leading opera houses. While still in her early twenties, she made debuts in rapid succession in Vienna, Bologna, Venice, Brussels, Berlin, Barcelona, Los Angeles and Munich.
Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, Machaidze was accepted into the famous Accademia del Teatro alla Scala at the age of seventeen and won first prize in 2006 in the Leyla Gencer Vocal Competition. As an adult, she has fast gained renown as a leading interpreter of the great bel canto roles of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini.
In the current 2010/2011 season she returned to La Scala in L’Elisir d’Amore and Romeo et Juliette and has made her successful Covent Garden debut as Juliette. In January 2011 she makes her Metropolitan Opera debut as Gilda in Rigoletto before returning to Los Angeles for Il Turco in Italia.
This new pairing has seemingly been a long time coming. “I first experienced Nino’s singing when she was still in La Scala’s Academy program and I’ve wanted to record with her ever since,” said Bogdan Roscic, president of Sony Classical. Machaidze is similarly enthused by the opportunity. “To be given the chance to record at this early age makes this signing extra special for me.”
Scheduled for release in the European spring, Nino Machaidze’s debut CD for the label will feature a variety of bel canto arias and showcase the roles that have helped make her an international success.
