Although neither of my parents played musical instruments, there was a lot of music in our house when I was growing up. My mother used to teach us a lot of songs on long car drives, and we had this big old record player that my father built that we’d listen to both classical and pop music on. I studied mostly ballet as a child, which is generally accompanied by an elderly lady in the corner plopping away on the piano with the same tunes over and again. It is music, but not the kind that shapes you.

I have an older brother and when we were kids he listened to a lot of the Beatles – I think that was a very big thing in our house in the 70s. My mother loved them as well. I realise now that I know practically every single lyric to every Beatles song. When I started to develop my own musical taste, it was quite an eclectic one....
