What does a conductor actually do?

The role of the conductor is to direct musicians through the use of gesture. This includes providing an indication of the tempo, beat and dynamics, as well as instructions on how to phrase, articulate, or simply when to come in. During rehearsals, the conductor is concerned with the interpretation of the music, and identifies any errors in the musicians’ playing. Conductors can be considered the composers’ representation, delivering the music in respect to the composers’ intentions.
