A sinking feeling
Why are Australian politicians so nervous about being seen to support the arts? asks Guy Noble.
I was doing a bit of research over breakfast the other day about the various levels of arts funding around the world. We aren’t doing too well. The Australia Council has about $215 million to dish out in regular funding (aside from COVID restart programs). To take one state, the NSW Government puts in about $300 million per year into the arts. I nearly blew smashed avocado out of my nostrils when I read that Germany will spend a huge 2.1 billion euros (around $AUD 3.15 billion) on arts and culture in 2021: 15 times the federal support in this country.
