Australian Chamber Orchestra and Dawn Upshaw head the impressive list of this years winners.

Dawn Upshaw and the Australian Chamber Orchestra picked up a remarkable three awards at the 56th Grammy ceremony in Los Angeles earlier. In a triumph that would confound most bookies their recording of Maria Schneider’s song cycle Winter Morning Walks won in all three categories in which it had been nominated. Upshaw won for Best Classical Vocal Solo while the work was recognised as Best Contemporary Classical Composition and it carried off the Best Engineered Album (Classical) award as well. The album’s producer David Frost also won Producer of the Year.

Timothy Calnin, ACO General Manager said the company was “thrilled” to have been recogised in this way. “We were immensely proud to be co-commissioners of Winter Morning Walks and to give a series of performances in the US last year prior to making the recording with Dawn in New York,” he said. Australian audiences will have the opportunity to hear these beautiful songs next month when Dawn Upshaw tours the country for the work’s Australian premiere.

Remarkably the recording is on ArtistShare, a fan-funded crowdsourcing label favoured by Schneider. “It feels amazing to have accomplished all of this through ArtistShare’s fan-funding,” she said. “I know of no one else that has fan-funded such a large-scale classical recording. And musically, what a thrill to have worked with Dawn, these two great orchestras, these world-class engineers and producer. This has been a dream project.”

It’s been a run of good news for the Minnesota Orchestra whose long-running lockout and management dispute came to an end this month. They won the Grammy for Best Orchestral Performance for their recording of Sibelius Symphonies No 1 and 4 on the Swedish label BIS conducted by their former chief Osmo Vänskä.

The Best Opera Recording went to the Metropolitan Opera’s US premiere of Thomas Adés’ The Tempest conducted by the composer himself and starring Simon Keenlyside, Isabel Leonard, Audrey Luna and Alan Oke. Beating Australian baritone Peter Coleman-Wright in The Rape of Lucretia, Vinci’s Artaserse and Christian Thielemann’s live recording of Wagner’s Ring, this represents another pat on the back for modern opera.

Indeed, contemporary music fared well all round with Brad Wells and Roomful of Teeth’s album Roomful of Teeth picking up the Best Chamber Music award while the award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo went to composer John Corigliano’s Concerto for Percussionist and String Orchestra with Evelyn Glennie as solist.

Lastly, but not leastly, pianist Lang Lang made up for his singular lack of classical nominations this year by popping up in a sparly blue outfit to join Metallica in a redition of One – a fairly over the top tribute to the late, great Lou Reed (the video below is maybe not for the faint hearted…). Classical music dead? Pull the other one…
