Opera Queensland: Aida
6 December 2023 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm AEST
With its towering digital screens, Davide Livermore’s 2018 production of Verdi’s Egyptian epic offers sensory and sometimes dramatic overload. “Many of the effects are thrilling,” wrote Limelight Editor Jo Litson, admiring the spectacular singing. “But both the staging and the vocals are so full-force at times that the emotion at the heart of the opera becomes overwhelmed.”Natalie Aroyan sings the title role with Diego Torre as Radamès, Elena Gabouri as Aida’s rival Amneris and Michael Honeyman as her father Amonasro. Lorenzo Passerini does the honours in the pit leading the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.
Limelight Editor’s Choice
Working with phenomenal new digital staging technology, director-choreographer Davide Livermore creates an extravagant theatrical experience of Verdi’s monumental opera Aida.
Opulent costumes and sensational visual effects reveal the glorious splendour of Egypt as it’s never been seen before.
Can love conquer all? A country ravaged by armed conflict is on the verge of collapse. Aida, a young prisoner of war in love with Radames, the General of the opposing army, finds herself torn between warring parties. We watch as they attempt to fulfil their desire in a world that refuses to allow it.
This Opera Queensland and Opera Australia co-production comprises a stellar cast, including acclaimed soprano Natalie Aroyan in the title role, powerful tenor Diego Torre as Radames and internationally renowned mezzo Elena Gabouri as Amneris. Adding vocal power and lustre to the mighty score are the Opera Australia and Opera Queensland Choruses.
