For African men the world over, the barber shop is more than a place to get a shave and a haircut. It’s a place to hear news, share views and talk politics, women and sport. It’s a place where a man can let down his guard, blow off steam, and leave looking sharp and feeling reinvigorated. The Nigerian-born, UK-based poet, designer and playwright Inua Ellams imagines these buzzing spaces on stage in a fresh, funny, truth-telling play, direct from the National Theatre in London. RAZOR-SHARP TALES FROM THE BARBER’S CHAIR Inua Ellams’ joyous play set in London and Africa has proved a cut above the rest. The Brahms Violin Concerto is one of the most astonishing works for violin and orchestra ever composed. In a spectacular performance, the violin runs the gamut of emotions: it sings like an angel, prowls like an animal and marches like a military band on parade. In the hands of a good violinist and orchestra, it’s brilliant. When you hear it performed by superstar Maxim Vengerov, described as ‘one of the greatest violin virtuosos of our time’ (The Australian), and Queensland Symphony Orchestra with Music Director Alondra de la Parra, it will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Also in the performance, de la Parra will conduct Dutilleux’s Métaboles, a complex showcase for orchestra based around the idea of change. The concert finishes with the exhilarating sounds of Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, a masterpiece of French Impressionism. It’s going to be a full-blooded performance featuring the might of Queensland Symphony Orchestra and The Australian Voices. Let Yourself Go on a rich emotional journey.
