The funding gives the go-ahead to an ambitious expansion project that will see the Gallery double in size.

The NSW State Government is to contribute $244 million over four years for the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ ‘Sydney Modern’ expansion, the Gallery has announced. The plan, for which the Gallery is also raising $100 million from private donors through a philanthropic campaign to be launched later this year, will see the AGNSW double in size.

“This is a remarkable day for the Gallery and the Australian arts community,” said Art Gallery of NSW Director Dr Michael Brand. “Our expanded Gallery will deliver an iconic building that combines art, architecture and landscape in an extraordinary way, and in one of the most breathtaking locations in the world.”
