The Australian classical guitarist has beaten André Rieu, Pavarotti and Star Wars to retain the ARIA Christmas top spot.

Roll over André Rieu. Slava Grigoryan’s Bach Cello Suites: Volume I has retained the top spot on the ARIA Core Classical Chart. What’s more, after six consecutive weeks there, the album has broken records as the longest running number one by any Australian artist since the chart began.

In reaching the historic sixth week, Grigoryan has overtaken Nicole Car, Greta Bradman and the cast album From Broadway to La Scala, all of which enjoyed five weeks at the top.

The Christmas period is the most competitive retail market of the year, and there was fierce competition from André Rieu’s Magic of The Waltz, Christmas with Pavarotti, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s A Symphonic Christmas and the soundtrack to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but Grigoryan fought them off to retain the top spot. What’s more, the album has also spent several weeks in the ARIA Pop Chart, as well as debuting at number one in both the iTunes Classical Chart and the ARIA Classical/Crossover Chart.
