Australian Ballet School students recreate the French impressionist’s famous ballet studies to celebrate the announcement.

It was a case of life imitating art today at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, as students of the Australian Ballet School joined by a member of the corps de ballet from the Australian Ballet, Sarah Thompson, recreated the elegant rehearsal room studies of the French impressionist master, Edgar Degas. The talented dancers were present to celebrate the announcement of what the NGV has described as “the most complex Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition ever staged.”

Degas: A New Vision, is set to be one of the most comprehensive retrospectives of the late 19th-century painter’s work ever mounted, featuring some 200 works brought together from 41 cities in 13 different countries. In addition to the artist’s famous ballet studies the exhibition will also offer a rare insight into other creative mediums used by Degas, including drawings, prints, sculptures and photographs.
