Brett Dean’s new opera can be accessed for a limited time on the Telegraph and Glyndebourne websites.

Brett Dean’s widely acclaimed new opera Hamlet is being made available for free streaming on Britain’s Telegraph website and the Glyndebourne website for one week. Available from 3am AEST on Friday July 7, this is a rare opportunity to experience Dean’s unique take on Shakespeare’s tale from the comfort of your own home.

Limelight’s Clive Paget, who reviewed the opera at Glyndebourne, described Hamlet as “an exciting, colourful and perfectly-paced telling of the play” that is both “emotionally powerful and entirely cohesive”. Directed by Australian Neil Armfield and with a libretto by Matthew Jocelyn, Hamlet is brought to life by a distinguished cast consisting of tenor Allan Clayton as the Danish Prince, soprano Barbara Hannigan as Ophelia, baritone Rod Gilfry as Claudius, and mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly as Gertrude. Legendary bass John Tomlinson does triple duty as The Ghost, Player, and Gravedigger.

While there have been many attempts to transform Shakespeare’s Hamlet into something fit for the operatic stage, none have been met with such immediate critical acclaim. Dean’s opera is not to be missed.
