Opera Australia is bringing Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s 1978 hit musical Evita to the Sydney Opera House in September 2018. Coinciding with the work's 40th anniversary, this marks the first time a Rice and Lloyd Webber work will be seen in the house. Producers John Frost and David Ian are bringing to Sydney audiences the original West End and Broadway production, directed by Hal Prince – now 89 – who is joined by original creative cast mates including choreographer Larry Fuller and designer Timothy O’Brien.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to recreate the renowned original production of Evita 40 years after it opened in the West End, following the wonderful success of My Fair Lady,” said Lyndon Terracini and John Frost. “To have the original creative team of Hal Prince, Larry Fuller and Timothy O’Brien overseeing the production is a dream come true.”
David Ian added, “I am absolutely thrilled to be presenting the original West End and Broadway version of this truly iconic musical in Australia with Opera Australia and John Frost. Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice and Hal Prince are legends of musical theatre; it gets no better than this”.
The Australian premiere has been secured exclusively for Sydney by Destination NSW, the government’s tourism and major events agency. “We are committed to securing premiere musical productions like Evita which will attract visitors to NSW. More than 17,000 overnight visitors are expected to travel to Sydney to see Evita, generating an estimated $14 million in overnight visitor expenditure,” said Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Adam Marshall.
An iconic musical, Evita has garnered more than 20 major awards since its very first outing, including the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Musical. No casting has yet been announced.
Evita plays the Joan Sutherland Theatre in the Sydney Opera House, September 2018.
