The German soprano Christiane Karg managed somehow to get thorough to the end of a performance of Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera at Glyndebourne on Sunday despite dislocating her knee during the first act.

The show was halted briefly after the singer took a tumble on stage early on in the three-hour opera. She was apparently supposed to jump through a paper wall in the fragile set but in the attempt she fell awkwardly on stage.

In a remarkable case of “is there a doctor in the house?” her left knee was relocated by a GP who just happened to be in the audience. Karg however declined painkillers as she wanted to be able to complete the performance – a feat she accomplished though she had to sit down for the rest of the evening.

One audience member told the UK’s Daily Mail that “it was pretty shocking to see her fall down and it was obvious that it was a serious tumble. The performance was immediately halted and everyone initially thought that there was no way she could carry on. She was extremely brave to carry on singing while sat at the front of the stage.
