Public voting opens today to choose an artist whose star will be embedded in the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Walk of Fame.

Online public voting opens today giving South Australians the chance to choose an artist whose name will be set in stone in the new star-studded walkway, which is expected to become a tourist attraction in Adelaide’s revitalised Riverbank precinct when it opens in early 2018.

The walkway is part of the $90 million redevelopment project that commenced in 2016. Initially it will include more than 130 names of some of the greatest artists to have graced the stages of the Adelaide Festival Centre (AFC) since it opened its doors in 1973, three months before the Sydney Opera House.
Three stars will be added to the Walk of Fame each year – one chosen by the public, one by the AFC and one by a panel of critics, who wil focus specifically on Australian artists.
This year, the public will vote for an artist who performed at the Centre during 2016 from a list of more than 200 artists including Amy Lehpamer, Dita von Teese, Billy Crystal, Marina Prior, Dami Im and Sammy J.
“Central to Adelaide Festival Centre’s success are artists who are our history and our future. With Adelaide Festival Centre undergoing redevelopment, we will introduce new outdoor facilities and attractions along the Riverbank. What better way to enhance these features in a high traffic promenade than to acknowledge the artists who made Adelaide Festival Centre what it is today,” said Douglas Gautier, Adelaide Festival Centre CEO & Artistic Director.
“The Walk of Fame will be a key attraction. This is a creative city, and the walk will tell our story. Last year, 10,000 people participated in the Walk of Fame’s public vote and we invite everyone to now select the artist who will earn the 2016 popular vote star on Adelaide’s Walk of Fame.”
The current redevelopment, which is scheduled for completion by 2020, is the most significant capital infrastructure project undertaken since the AFC was built. The Walk of Fame will act as an east-west promenade along the River Torrens side of the venue providing pedestrian access to new entries to the Dunstan Playhouse and the Festival Theatre.
Public voting commences today and closes at midnight on Sunday July 9, 2017. Each person voting will be entered into a competition for the chance to win a 2018 Adelaide Festival Centre Season Package which includes two A Reserve tickets to four Adelaide Festival Centre presented shows in 2017, including Adelaide Cabaret Festival and OzAsia Festival shows, valued at approximately $350.
