The Australian musical theatre star won the American prize for his performance in Man of La Mancha.

One of Australia’s most celebrated musical theatre stars, Anthony Warlow, has been named as one of the recipients of the 2016 Helen Hayes Awards. Warlow received the prestigious American prize in recognition of his performance in the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s production of Man of La Mancha, presented in Washington D.C. last March.

Warlow is one of the most celebrated and critically acclaimed stalwarts of the Australian musical theatre scene, who also boasts an impressive international stature. His career, spanning more than 30 years, has seen him in starring roles in musicals, operettas and operas across Australia and overseas. Most recently, Warlow wowed Audiences in a new Australian production of Fiddler on the Roof, which premiered at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in January.

The Helen Hayes Awards, named in tribute of the “First Lady of American Theatre,” are presented annually in recognition of excellence in theatre productions shown in the Washington D.C. area. DCTheatreScene.com said of the Australian star’s performance: “Warlow perfects with consummate professionalism director Alan Paul’s vision,” while the Washington Post’s Nelson Pressley noted, “The charismatic Warlow leads the charge in one of those cases when a role just flat-out fits.”
