The Brandenburg’s latest concert is an all-Mozart affair and an all Australian one to boot. No international celebs, but with Marshall McGuire and Melissa Farrow, no shabby ring-ins either.

The evening opened with the 16-year-old Mozart’s overture to his opera Lucio Silla. A step up from his previous opera seria outings (he’d been knocking them out since the age of 14!), this one has a military opening with horns and drums, a lyrical and atmospheric central movement and a jolly rondo finale. Incisively played and led by Paul Dyer on the fortepiano, it might have benefited from shorter breaks between the movements to carry the dramatic through line. Nevertheless, it had bags of character.

The double concerto for flute and harp was written by the 22-year-old Mozart for a Parisian Duke and his daughter to play in duet – amateurs, yes, but clearly gifted ones. In the end the composer fell out with his patrons who may never have realised what a little gem they had (reluctantly) paid for.
