TOSA Q & OSQ Present Thomas Heywood - "Masterpieces"

Be swept into a musical wonderland with the finest classical and romantic music, including orchestral masterpieces specially arranged for the Concert Organ.  “The most compelling music making of any kind I’ve heard in ages” The Dallas Morning News, USA.

Australia’s internationally acclaimed organ virtuoso Thomas Heywood enjoys an outstanding reputation as one of the world’s finest concert organists.

Thomas captivated Brisbane audiences when he reopened the Brisbane City Hall Organ with a sold out concert in 2014. His international touring has included Russia, Hong Kong, UK, Europe, New Zealand, South Korea and USA. He is a favourite of Australian audiences, and has performed 1700 concerts to over 600,000 people.

Heywood’s programme of “Masterpieces” will perfectly balance the sophistication and versatility of Brisbane’s magnificent Hill Norman and Beard ‘Christie’ pipe organ.

CHRISTIE CINEMA PIPE ORGAN

Affectionately known as “The Christie”, a 1934-vintage 11 rank cinema pipe organ manufactured by the British Hill Norman and Beard Pipe Organ Company  (approx. 1000 pipes) brought to Brisbane in 1969 from the Granada Theatre, Maidstone, England and now installed in the Kelvin Grove State College Theatre. These musical giants, as much orchestra as organ and entirely mechanical including percussion and a sound effects suite, roared into picture theatres across the world. They allowed one skilled musician to conjure up a symphony of sound and provide every necessary musical impression for breathing life into silent films and the popular music of the day. The Christie, England’s answer to the marvellous American Wurlitzer, provided luxurious 1930's cinemas with their own sophisticated musical identity after the silent era ended.
