MAA is a full-length contemporary solo dance piece and the most personal work to date from international actor and dancer, Jay Emmanuel. MAA is a unique synthesis of Indian classical dance forms and Jacques Lecoq’s physical theatre techniques that draws on Jay’s personal story of loss, suffering and abuse during his childhood in India – and its convergence into the body and the creative voice trying to find his balance in an unstable world.
Moving between genres, Jay weaves threads of memory, experience and myth into a surreal world of surprising connection. At once intimate and epic, MAA explores fragility in the face of natural forces, and celebrates the resilience of the human spirit in the rhythms of labour, in dream and story, and in transformation and survival.
For this production, Emmanuel teams up with award winning director Phil Thomson (Company Dramaturg, Ochre Contemporary Dance Company), and internationally acclaimed composer Tao Issaro (Composer/performer, Daksha Seth Dance Company).
This boundary-stretching hybrid of theatre and dance is as emotionally honest a work of art as anything you’ll ever experience. Visceral, gripping and finally redemptive, it is 60 minutes you will never forget.
As thrilling as it is affecting, it is a stunning testament to the transformative power of art.
A variety of snacks from Jay’s home town of Indore will be available for purchase at the venue from 6.30pm. BYO wine ($5 corkage/bouteille).
