Nearing one million YouTube views, Australia's only authentic 1920s jazz singer, Greg Poppleton, opens the spectacular 1920s Gin Mill Social, Slide Cabaret, 41 Oxford St Surry Hills, Friday 24 March.
Completely uninfluenced by contemporary music, the Sydney-based singer's passion for classic jazz goes back to age three when he first saw Louis Armstrong on television.
Greg has excited audiences for the Sydney Festival, Waiheke International Jazz Festival NZ, Blue Mountains 1920s Festival Art Deco Ball, and the Rocks Village Bizarre. Two of his 1920s-30s albums have been played on commercial radio.
An award-winning swing and jazz broadcaster on 107.3 2SER and 22 radio stations across Australia, Greg has played opposite some of Hollywood's Academy Award And Golden Globe winners including Adrien Brody, John Goodman and Nicole Kidman. He was auditioned twice for the band leader role in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby.
'They Didn't Believe Me' from Greg's new album, 'Back In Your Own Backyard' was picked for the soundtrack of a new German-Israeli movie co-production, 'The Cake Maker'.
This is now the fourth big year for the ever popular Gin Mill Social at Slide.
The monthly roaring twenties Gin Mill Social, directed by Jeremy Brennan, is the perfect night for getting your Gatsby on!
It's a speakeasy banquet and a night of live music and dancing, plus surprise pop up performances… a night where you can feast, dance and play!
“Absolutely flooring. Greg Poppleton’s 1920s – 1930s jazz and swing always hits the spot. So authentic.”
Women’s Vintage Radio (U.S).
“Your great voice, your ability to “sell a song” and your particular energy came across as completely American while sounding Australian! And that trio is an absolute knockout.”
Lance Belville, Writer / Theatre Director, San Francisco.
The party begins at 7pm sharp. Food is served banquet style, arriving on platters made for sharing. The dress code is simple. Girls in pearls. Guys in ties.
