The Gramophone Awards shortlist has been announced, showcasing the year’s classical best and brightest on CD and DVD. Among the nominees: Australia’s own Sir Charles Mackerras for the posthumous release of his final recording with the Czech Philharmonic; not one but two new documentaries on the great maestro Carlos Kleiber; piano wars between Mitsuko Uchida, Murray Perahia and Nelson Freire; two concerto nominations for the redoubtable French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet; a nod to maestro Vasily Petrenko who makes his debut with Sydney Symphony this month; and a slew of Bach and Handel in the Baroque categories. Who will emerge triumphant this year on October 6? Click through the following 15 pages to check out the nominees by category. The finest six offerings in each genre were picked by Gramophone’s panel of reviewers; the top three are denoted here with asterisks.
