EDITOR'S NOTE
|
Iconic homegrown composer Peter Sculthorpe has been honoured with the 2012 Art Music Award for distinguished services to Australian music. The 83-year-old was loath to hear himself described as the "father of Australian classical music", but was keen to tell us what he reckons he has in common with George Clooney.
Find out which other Australian music luminaries picked up awards from APRA and the Australian Music Centre, and view Limelight's photo gallery from this week's ceremony hosted by trumpeter James Morrison at the Sydney Opera House.
Limelight continues our series of 10 Desert Island Discs, this time with a swag of goodies from star accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen, fresh from his recent Australian tour. Find out which albums inspire one of the world's most adventurous classical musicians.
Now, some of you may have noticed Limelight getting up to some mischief on April Fool's day with our breaking news about cellist Yo-Yo Ma. We know the joke's on us that it's still up on our site past 12pm on April 1, but we couldn't resist sharing the story, which has gone viral. After the long weekend we'll be back to our normal, serious selves... Promise!
In the meantime, for something a little darker, try Sydney Chamber Opera's controversial new production of Philip Glass's haunting In the Penal Colony, which has its Australian premiere this week to mark the the cult composer's 75th birthday. Not to be missed.
Have a safe and relaxing break, with plenty of good music. Visit the Limelight website tomorrow to check out our exclusive Easter listening guide.
