Goran Bregovic and his Weddings & Funerals Orchestra - Champagne for Gypsies
The celebrated composer and former Balkan rock star, Goran Bregovic and his 18-piece orchestra will explode onto the Concert Hall stage at QPAC on Thursday March 14th 2013.
Bregovic and his critically acclaimed “Weddings and Funerals Orchestra” present “Champagne for Gypsies”, a raucous blend of Gypsy brass band, traditional Bulgarian tunes, persussion, electric guitar and strings capturing the beautiful calamity of Gypsy weddings.
A Fiery Balkan hot pot of love, lust and the maddest of talent, the award-winning former rock star from the Balkans harnesses the echoes of Gypsy weddings from that terrible frontier where for centuries Catholics, Orthodox Christians, Jews and Muslims made war and lived together. Goran Bregovic’s Wedding and Funeral Band “Champagne for the Gypsies” remind us of our favourite gypsy musicians who left a trace in popular culture around the world – Gypsy Kings, Eugene Hütz of Gogol Bordello, Florin Salam, and Stephane Eicher.
Goran Bregovic describes himself simply as a contemporary composer. Why then does his "contemporary" sound different from music of other contemporary composers? Because Goran is from the Balkans. And in the Balkans "contemporary" is different.
He says, “Music that our soul recognises instinctively and the body greets with an irresistible urge to dance.”
During Bregovic’s 2008 tour, the critics were strident in their praise.
