Capital Jazz Project Presents – The Lawrence Ku Trio: Steiner Nickelsen And Nicholas Mcbride
The Lawrence Ku trio will be performing music from Ku's recently completed and recorded Pictures Suite, a collection of compositions that represent several musical still lifes of the fascinating city of Shanghai, from its densely packed streets of pedestrian chaos, to the quiet tree-lined lanes of the old French Concession, to its pulsing and frantic night life.
Guitarist/composer Lawrence Ku has been a dominant force on the jazz scene in China for over ten years. Born and raised in Los Angeles California, Lawrence has made China his base of operations since 1997, first in Beijing, now in Shanghai. A versatile musician, Ku can be seen performing on stages small and large all over China and abroad in his own projects or as a sideman. His trio, featuring Steinar Nickelsen on organ and Nicholas McBride on drums is a fine example of the modern organ trio: steeped in tradition, but always pushing and exploring new creative territory.
Norwegian keyboard wizard Steinar Nickelsen is one of a kind, his mastery of soundscape and constant inventiveness make him one of the most sought after musicians on the Shanghai scene as well as in northern Europe. Though living in Shanghai, he seems to be in a constant state of travel, everywhere at once, always moving, always playing. Drummer Nicholas Mcbride is a native of Canberra, Australia, and has made China his home for over eight years. Known for his deep groove and finesse on the drum set, Nicholas is the first call drummer for all types of musical situations.
